Back Pain? It May Be Your Shoes!

12 12 2007

Need some holiday cheer? Here is the perfect justification to go and buy yourself a pair of shoes! I was reading an interesting article today and I have included it for your viewing pleasure.

A special thanks to Leslie LoBue for this article

“UNDATED (WJRT) — (12/11/07)– If you are having back pain, believe it or not — your feet may be to blame.

HealthFirst reporter Leslie LoBue says relief may be just a shoebox away.

From high heels, to as low as they go, women have had a long love affair with shoes. But fashion and function don’t always mesh.

On this high-tech runway, podiatrists get to the bottom of a patient’s pain. Force plates imbedded in the floor measure pressure points in the foot.

One other common problem, heel pain, is often caused by walking in completely flat shoes.

“Every shoe I buy has a little heel. I don’t wear anything flat,” said Rita Schlessinger.

For some patients, a new style may be just what the doctor ordered. Podiatrist Kathya Zinzer says they have to fit the person who’s going to wear them.

“Every person is an individual, and every footprint and foot type is like your own basic fingerprint. So every shoe type is going to be different for different patients.”

With this motion detection system, cameras on the outside of the runway send out infrared light. They reflect movement of sensors placed on patients’ ankles, toes and legs. That provides a 3-D image of the patient in mid-stride.

“A lot of patients who come in to see us, come in and are having a lot of lower back pain or knee pain, and it really starts from the foot,” said Zinzer.

Doctors say any heel over two inches changes the body’s center of gravity. Over time, some patients may begin to feel the effects, but that doesn’t mean high heels have to take a hike.

By occasionally switching styles, you’ve got a better chance of staying pain and injury free.

The Gait Study Center at Temple University is considered one of the most advanced labs of its kind in the world.

Their technology can also be used to help you find the right running shoe.”

Why — because we are interested in more than simply talking about shoes, we care about the feet that go in them too, thats you!

Go and buy some new shoes - do it in the name of health, holidays or just because your friends at shoesoftheday.com recommended it.

Enjoy your shoes of the day, now go and get another pair.

Ugg Nog

3 12 2007

‘Tis the season for good friends, good times, good egg nog and good shoes. The Ugg and nog have very similar characteristics. First of all the Ugg.

Unless you have been living in a hole, you already know that this is the most popular boot on the ‘winter’ market. Everywhere I go I see the Uggs. I have even seen them at the gym. Hey, I didn’t think you could do the stair-master in boots either, boy was I wrong. Nate, you were there.

This sturdy and stylish boot does it all. Socks or sans-socks, you can’t go wrong in these top of the sheepskin line-d boots. The Ugg boots offer ultra comfort, warmth, and functionality of a shorter height, these boots fit great under or over pants. Soft sheepskin suede upper with soft, comfortable natural shearling fleece lining. What is the last pair of shoes you could wear under or over? Right, moon boots. Think of these as your more comfortable and more expensive moon boots.

Wear them up or fold them down to expose the furry sheepskin lining.

Top of the line Ugg boots

Now the Nog:

Blend mildly, or hit liquefy for a few extra minutes and you get the same fluffy top as you see when you fold down the Ugg! Okay, really so what does egg nog have to do with feet? Well, for really sore feet, 10X the ingredients below and fill your jetted tub. Turn on the jets for the same frothy, whipped effect. Soak feet for 5-10 minutes. Don’t forget to bring a mug for the occasional sip — and keep your Uggs close by, they will never smell better. Um, soaking wet wool that smells like cinnamon and nutmeg. Next thing you know all of the top health spas will be doing this ‘nog-foot-bath’ — just remember you heard it first from the shoesoftheday.com

Egg Nog

If you combine the two, you get a tasty holiday treat for your feet. The shoes of the day: Uggs. The drink of the month: Nog

For the Veggie/Vegan animal-lover type who are still upset about the animals who gave their wool that some folks might have warm feet, enjoy your Soy Nog:

1 quart soy milk
6 ounces Mori-Nu silken style tofu, extra firm (I Really don’t know what this is, but if you have it in the cupboard, this may be your one chance to use it.)
6 tablespoons maple syrup
2 teaspoons vanilla
1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Chill before serving. Makes 5 cups.

*No animals were used in the production of this email…other than the animals used for the shoes. But I had nothing to do with the manufacturing, I just write the shoe reviews and share incredible shoe recipes.

Souls For Soles - Or Vice Versa

29 11 2007

I just found another great site, Soles4Souls.org.  In a nut-sole here is what they do: “We have a simple mission: to impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes. We are partnering with charities and governments around the world to provide a basic (yet indispensable) gift that most of us take for granted. You can help us in many ways: donating your own shoes, donating cash for freight, hosting a shoe drive, or even donating your time as a volunteer. As shoe industry professionals, we are working hard to use the resources at our disposal to make a difference — but we need your help (and your shoes) to reach out to the world.”

The shoes of the day is about saving your soles, and this is one simple way to begin.  Thanks Soles4Souls.

Don’t take your shoes for granted.

Now You Can Keep Your Shoes On!

28 11 2007

If there is one place where I want to keep my shoes on, it is at the airport — especially through airport security. At the Seattle airport a few years ago, I was rushing to get to my plane, and forgot to take my shoes off before passing through the security gates. As I approached the the security guard he just starred at my shoes and then pointed at them and said “Sir, please remove your shoes.” I thought I don’t have anything funny in these shoes — so I proceeded, elevated my shoulders and carefully walked through. The alarm didn’t sound, but still the security guard sent me for the full scan. And I had to take off my shoes and they ran them through the x-ray machine.

I just located some great news by a writer from wired magazine, Charley Sorrel. He writes “according to Wikipedia T-Rays, or Terahertz Radiation, can “pass through clothing, paper, cardboard, wood, masonry, plastic and ceramics.” You can now add shoes to that list.  Boffins at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Lab have come up with a smaller and cheaper way to generate the radiation, which can be used as a safe alternative to X-Rays (T-Rays are non-ionizing).  This means that airports could be equipped with yet more “security” machines, and you, the passenger (read: suspect) will get to keep your shoes on.” I love technology.

So if you want to keep your shoes on, ask for the new T-Ray Scanner or travel to Mexico, you don’t have to remove your shoes there — although they may make you remove your sombrero.

Meet Steve Madden In Person

15 11 2007

Attention people of New Jersey: Steve Madden wants to talk with you in person! This is your chance to have a “proper conversation” with him. He was quoted as saying “The art of conversation is dying,” he explained. “All those things that force you not to go meet with other people is killing conversation.” Between designing shoes and cruising through his stores, he likes to sit and watch and talk with his customers. “The customers think I’m strange,” he said. “They’re thinking, ‘What is this 50-year-old man doing asking me about my shoes?’ ”

Here are the fast facts for meeting Mr. Madden, the 49 year old shoe-guru.

Reuse-A-Shoe

15 11 2007

Corporate responsibility has a new color: green. The green thinkers at Nike say “every year, across the globe, millions of pairs of athletic shoes end up in landfills or are disposed of in some other way. That’s a lot of shoes going to waste that contain valuable materials that could be re-used if a degree of imagination, some ingenious engineering and a persistent pursuit of the principles of sustainability were to be applied.”  I can’t wait to see the next shoe car…now that would be some ingenious engineering.

Shoes of the day is thinking green, so recycle your old pair today.
